CNN —Over two years ago, a 40-minute-long public plea made on Instagram Live rippled across social media. Melanie and Miranda had performed together as the Wilking Sisters, but the family said Derrick had disappeared from their lives. Until then, it’s unlikely that Derrick’s millions of followers would have noticed anything amiss, based on her social media accounts. Melanie Wilking and Miranda Derrick (formerly Wilking) built up a following together on social media platforms including YouTube and TikTok as the Wilking Sisters. They have maintained through social media posts that Miranda's issues with her family are a personal dispute.

Big Oil’s big climate showdownMonths of tensions between oil majors and activist investors could reach a boiling point at the annual meetings of Exxon Mobil and Chevron Wednesday, as the U.S. giants pump record levels of crude and sit on bumper profits. Activists’ efforts to pressure Big Oil to clean up its polluting ways are faltering. Last week, climate change protests rocked Shell’s annual meeting in London. Exxon could face an even fiercer battle this week — not only with the activist investors it is suing, but from powerful institutional investors as well. They include Norway’s huge sovereign wealth fund, and CalPERS, the California pension fund, both of which strongly oppose Exxon’s attempt to quiet some of its most vocal climate critics.

Crowdstrike (CRWD) is a best-in-class cybersecurity leader that is poised for a technical breakout from resistance, despite being richly valued. One of the top concerns for firms in a post-pandemic world of remote, at-home workers is cybersecurity. Plus, the industry will also benefit greatly from the generative AI and cloud computing boom. And the long-term outlook for cybersecurity stocks is quite bullish as we power into what Nvidia's Jensen Huang refers to as 'the next industrial revolution'. I had recently moved to Washington, D.C., with a $40,000 starting salary, almost $45,000 of student debt and very little savings. I started with small but powerful changesDiscovering that interest calculator was a huge turning point for me because it jumpstarted my financial education. At the time, I made about $2,492 per month after taxes and deductions, and before monthly debt payments. I slowly increased my debt payments. As my income grew, I increased my extra debt payments up to $1,500 until I was debt-free.

New York CNN —OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and his husband have become the newest billionaires to sign the Giving Pledge, a charity that encourages the ultra-rich to donate their wealth to philanthropic causes. Bloomberg reports that Altman is worth at least $2 billion, with much of his wealth drawn from startup investments, including a sizable investment in Reddit. The pledge isn’t a legally binding contract, but more of a moral commitment. She recently resigned from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation earlier this month following her divorce from Bill. As part of her divorce agreement, she received $12.5 billion from the Gates Foundation for her work upon her resignation.

How to begin investingA simple way to get started is by purchasing low-cost index funds, Sethi says. Index funds track market indexes like the S&P 500, which follows the stock performance of around 500 large U.S. publicly traded companies, such as Microsoft, Apple and Nvidia. To get started, you'll need to open a brokerage account, traditional IRA, Roth IRA or other investment account. But don't let your funds simply sit in your brokerage account. You'll need to go one step further and decide which funds you'd like to invest in.

When South Africans vote Wednesday, an unhappy combination of rampant corruption, soaring joblessness, crippling power cuts and feeble economic growth will likely be top of mind. Black South Africans, who make up 81% of the population, are at the sharp end of this dire situation. ‘Elite enrichment’Under apartheid — and colonial rule before that — Black South Africans were violently oppressed and denied many basic human rights. Millions of South Africans still live in such informal settlements. “The poster child of this is the electricity sector.”For much of last year, South Africans were without power for at least some portion of the day.

Several investors released a joint letter this month urging fellow shareholders to vote down the package as excessive. Tesla shareholders approved the pay package in 2018, with compensation tied to Tesla's performance including its market value. And he still has time to meet goals he hasn't reached, including on revenue, because the pay package had a 10-year term. In the 440-page proxy statement explaining the vote, a committee of the Tesla board noted the "novel circumstances." Some people began sharing screenshots of their votes in April, shortly after the Tesla board announced the vote, and the deadline to vote online is June 12.

This is not the first time Alito has found himself in hot water over displaying a controversial flag on his property. The upside-down flag, a signal of distress, was adopted by Trump supporters who believed the false claim that the election had been stolen. (Alito said his wife had raised the upside-down flag in response to a disagreement with a neighbor. The discovery also comes at a time when the Supreme Court will be making a decision about Trump’s claims of sweeping presidential immunity, his get-out-of-jail-free card for the federal cases he faces. “The notion that the Supreme Court can be trusted to be an arbiter above partisan politics has suffered major blows in recent years.

Eastern Ukraine CNN —Russian President Vladimir Putin’s signaling this week that he is open to peace talks should be viewed with vast, overshadowing caveats, and the weight of Ukraine’s - and the West’s - past experience of Russian diplomacy. Putin questioned the legitimacy of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, who Moscow has repeatedly assailed, after Kyiv had to delay elections because of the very war Putin started. Zelensky has said he hopes China - Russia’s most potent ally but only partial supporter in the Ukraine war - will attend. Putin may be talking peace now to suggest to Beijing to not be involved in diplomacy about Russia without Russia present. Valentyn Ogirenko/ReutersUkraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, said Friday that Putin’s hints at peace talks were directly aimed at sabotaging the summit.

Here’s why we eat popcorn at the movies

But the perfect (and very profitable) pairing of today wasn’t always the case: For many years, movie theaters wanted nothing to do with the snack. People watch movies in a newly reopened AMC River East theater on Aug. 20, 2020, in Chicago. Popular movies often bring collectible cups and popcorn buckets, or, in industry-speak, Collectible Concession Vehicles (CCVs). The cinema business will continue to evolve, but one thing will remain constant, said Gil of Queen’s University. “Theaters will stop playing movies before they will actually stop selling popcorn.”

Younger Americans are finally outspending baby boomers, former Wall Street bank analyst Meredith Whitney recently noted. That's an encouraging sign for the US economy, which most economists believe is healthy, though some bearish prognosticators have serious doubts. There are several possible explanations for these findings and numerous takeaways from them, the "Oracle of Wall Street" said. However, young Americans' spending power shouldn't be discounted, as Whitney suggested that they command relatively high salaries since they attend college at higher rates. A continued economic expansion would be especially crucial for Gen Zers and millennials, who are entering the workforce or establishing their careers.
